I also wanted to be more familiar with the lights so that I would be comfortable using them whilst working with a client in the future. This is because I have not felt very confident with lighting and I think it is one of my weak points.
To begin with I did low key lighting set up. To do this I used one light at the front of the model and on the other side I used a light to backlight her. I think that this shoot went quite well. However, as I had the studio booked out for an evening session, there were no tutors around to help me. A problem I encountered with this shoot was that there were the other members of my group using the lights in another section of the studio. This meant that all the flashes were setting each other off. Additionally, I wasn't sure if I had set the lights up correctly and I think that this shows in a few of my photos, as the background is not as black as it should be. However, I think that I did quite well even though I did encounter these problems.
The second shoot I did was also in the studio. This was supposed to be a high key lighting set up. However, I asked a tutor to help me and we came across so many problems. Firstly the Mamiya medium format wasn’t working, and then the lighting did not seem to be right. As I had not set up a high key lighting set up before, I asked a tutor for help. However, I still feel as though the lights do not look very high key. This is because shadows are created across the backdrop. Therefore, I have decided that I will book the studio out again and give the high key lighting set up another go.
After these first two shoots in the studio I was not completely happy with my work. This is mainly due to the work going wrong on the high key set up. I tried to book the studio out again as I wanted to give the high key set up another go. Unfortunately, the studio was fully booked at this point right up until the deadline. Due to this I decided to book two ranger kits out and set up a studio at home! For this I used wallpaper as a backdrop and a model in front of this wearing a blue dress. With these I wanted to play around with the lights a bit more and also I wanted a shadow of the models figure to be mimicked on the wall. I think that these have worked well but I have had a huge problem with these photos on my blog. This is because they are coming out a really dull colour when the same image looks normal on the screen but in blogger they just seem to go really dull. I have tried everything I can to defeat this problem. I have edited the photos again and tried to upload them onto blogger again. I have deleted them and tried to upload them again. However, nothing seems to work. I really do not understand what the problem is. Due to this I have requested that my images of this shoot be viewed in my Powerpoint Presentation instead of on blogger.
The final photoshoot that I did was completely different to the other work I have done for this project. I mainly wanted to try a completely different approach. For this I took the Ranger kit to a field near my house with my boyfriend. I then asked him to model for me but I wanted him to look quite intimidating. I think that these are quite interesting due to the fact that I have tried a completely new direction i.e. using a male model, using lights outside instead of indoors. There were a few problems on this shoot. Firstly, there are a lot of dog walkers in this area and the lights were at points almost blocking off the walkway. Luckily, as we did the shoot quite late there weren't too many people around. Additionally, as it was a windy night, the lights were shaking at points and I thought that they may fall over. This really worried me so I used the bags for the Ranger kits to put around the lighting stand to try to add a bit more strength to them. I also tried to hold the lighting stand whilst taking pictures. However, this was making it difficult for me to get different angles and try a variety of compositions.
Throughout this project I feel as though I have pushed myself into trying new things which normally I would have shyed away from due to lack of confidence with the lights. I feel that now I would get stuck in rather than worrying that I may not have enough technical knowledge. I also think that I would now feel comfortable working with a client within a studio environment whereas before I would not have been. I have decided that I am going to book the studio out on a regular basis to improve on my skills and also create a wide range of photographs for my portfolio.

Flyer

I have decided that I would like to make a flyer by myself for my own work. The large image is a photograph by Alison. We then decided to use thumbnails down the right side of the flyer. With the flyer, we wanted to keep it quite simple and let the photographs speak for themselves. The reason that we put Alison's image on the back is because we felt that it would tie in as well with the fashion images on the front as it is a completely different style of photography and the colours are much brighter. We decided to use the thumbnails on the right to give the viewer more of an example of our work. The scanner I used has given it a grainy effect, but the print out does not actually look like this. Me any my group used Quark Express to make the flyer. The reason for using this is because you can make double sided documents in Quark Express. For the front of the flyer, me and Jason used our images. This is because our work is both fashion based so it works well together. With these two images, it was a conscious decision to lay out the images as they are. This is because the models are both facing towards each other. Therefore, this brings your eyes into the flyer more. Although the images on the front are very different, I feel that they work well together. This is because the image on the left looks almost black and white as there is a lot of darkness surrounding the model, and the model is very pale. However, my image on the right has a strong patterened background, the models skin looks darker and she is wearing a blue dress. I feel that these images work well together as they show that we are versatile in our photography styles and there are various styles of photography that we are confident with. The reason that we decided to make the images full bleed and have the name going down the left is because we felt that it was more minimal and we also did not want lots of spaces with nothing on when we could use that space.

Set Building

For my location lighting work I built a mini set. This was with the wallpaper. I basically, stuck the wallpaper to the wall in my house. The hardest part was when I had to match the pieces up together. image is by the same photographer as the previous one (Jitka Hanzlova). I think that these work well as a set because they have similarities but are also very versatile. This is because this is shot from eye level whereas the previous image was taken from above. I think it is quite interesting to see a forest lit up at night because it makes it look inviting when in reality a dark forest can be quite eerie at night. I like how the light is quite spread out in this and you can see quite a lot of detail of the trees. This is contrating to my location photographs in the forest as I wanted to light only the main subject and I wanted the surrounding areas to be quite dark.

Research

Jitka Hanzlova

Forest Untitled (Working Title:Wet Morning Grass)

2003

I think that this image is effective due to its simplicity. I think that it is interesting to look at this as it is kind of similar to my work without the model. This is beause it is nature lit up in the dark. This is lit up much more than my images that I took at night. I think that in this there are probably at least 3 lights used. This is because there is the light going either up or down the middle of the photograph. It looks like there is a light shining on the front of the girl and also one shining on her back. Therefore, everything is lit up a lot more than in my work in which I only have the direct subject lit up. The light shining at the middle of the photograph reminds me a lot of Gregory Crewdson's lighting style. This is because he uses lots of direct lighting where you can clearly see the direction of the light and it looks like it is almost travelling in a line.

Research

Dazed and Confused Magazine

Issue #46

Photographer-Matt Irwin

I found this image interesting because, firstly, it show a girl and a tree being lit up in dark. The second image shows just the two girls and everything else is dark. I think that these are similar to my work in lighting but the style is very different as this is primarily fashion based. What I do like about these is that the girls look like they are clothed in nightwear. Due to this I think that they look almost like they are sleepwalking (especially in the top photograph where the girl is covering her face).

Research

Sarah Jones

The Park (2)

2002

This photograph is by Sarah Jones. In this photograph I think that it looks effective how the body is lit up in comparison to the dark surroundings. Additionally, the way that the woman is laying across the tree is very powerful. Firstly, I like the way that the woman is laid as it looks as though she is comfortable and is relaxing. However, the way her head is slightly lifted contradicts this as it suggests that she is uneasy.
I find the lighting on this photograph interesting as it is very similar to how I used the lighting when I used the ranger kit outside. This is because I mainly tried to light the person that I was photographing and the direct areas around the person.

Research

Gregory Crewdson

Untitled (Ray of Light)

2001

This photograph is by Gregory Crewdson. Firstly, I think that it looks effective how he combines the lights from inside a house with artificial lighting that he has actually placed on the street. For instance the spotlight and the light at the bottom left corner. Additionally, I like the way that the spotlight lights up an area that the viewer is supposed to be drawn to and is kept quite mysterious. The way that it looks mysterious and quite eerie is because you cannot see where the light soure begins but it comes from the sky. Therefore, I feel that it is maybe mimicking a spaceship or something supernatural.

Location Photographs Set 2

Image 4

I think that this image is successful for various reasons. Firstly, I like the fact that just the man and the tree are lit up and everything else is in darkness. Secondly, I think it looks effective how the man is looking confrontationally at the viewer. The reason I like this is because it was my original aim to produce a set of images where the man looks intimidating. Additionally, I feel that the way the photograph is taken from a low angle emphasises the fact that the man is looking down at the viewer.

Location Photographs Set 2

Image 3

In this image, I think that the man looks homeless as he is sat against the fence lighting a cigarette in the cold. I have also chosen to use a male model for this shoot. This is because I feel as though I have used my female model for enough shoots for this project and it will be interesting to have a bit more versatility in my images. I will use the lights to light up the model and the areas surrounding him. However, I would like the details to fade into darkness around the edges.
For this photoshoot, I wanted to play with the general idea of how it can be threatening to see a man wearing a hoodie at night. Furthermore, I would like the man to look quite intimidating.
I have chosen this location because it is not too far from my house so I won't have to carry the heavy lighting kits too far. Additionally, there is a tree which could be interesting to use as it hasa brick hanging from it which is quite bizarre! There is also a wire netting fence there which may be effective as it could mimic prison bars.

Research

Photographer- Horst Diekgerdes
Dazed & Confused
Vol 2 Issue #36

These photographs really inspire me. This is because I love the whole design aspect of them. I think that the way that the dress looks amazing the way that it is blown out. The photograph on the left reminds me of a butterfly how the dress is positioned. I think that this has proximity to my work with the blue dress as I tried to get the model to express herself using the dress. I also think that the shadow of the woman against the wall is similar to how shadows have been used in my work. I really like how there is kind of a spotlight on the woman which fades into darkness around the edges. This may have been achieved by using a snoot on the light which will concentrate the light on a small surface area.

Location Photographs Set 1

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172420775395681890" style="DISPLAY: block; This will be very fashion based work.
Additionally, I would like to do a shoot outside, if I have time. With the outside photoshoot I would like to do it at night in a woodland area. I would like to light things I find in a forest, such as trees, bushes, streams etc. I have considered using a model for this but am not entirely sure at the moment.

Studio Lighting Lesson

Today, the group had a lesson with a commercial photographer called Simon. Firstly, we used a flash unit with a torch and coloured gels. There was a model, two assistants and a photographer. The photographer was using long exposures and one assistant was using a torch to create lines of light. The other assistant fired off the flash once or twice in each exposure and used the coloured gels over the flash. The results looked effective and we tried to get a different effect on each exposure.
Later on in the day, Simon asked the group to take in images of a lighting set up that we were interested in. Simon then chose three set ups to recreate using the materials and lights that were in the studio. We did this by firstly, deciding where the light was coming from in each image. We then made a team from people in the class and re-created the set-up. I found this really effective because it showed that you do not need a complex idea with loads of props and lighting to create an interesting image.

Research

Nixon Watch Advertisement

Found in Dazed & Confused

Vol 2 Issue# 46

I find this advertisement really interesting. I love how the mans face is lit up and how depth of field is used to make his cheek and small section of hair in focus but his nose and the rest of his hair out of focus. I also like the detail of this and you can see the pore on his cheeks. This will have been achieved using a macro lens. With the lighting, I think that it is coming from the right side of the man as that side is lit up and his left side is fading into shadows.

Research

Paul Smith Advertisement

I have selected this image because I think that it ties in with my idea of using wallpaper as a backdrop. The problem with this is that the studio is now fully booked up. However, as I have done two photoshoots in the studio, I feel that I am now willing to do some shoots on location. I am going to collect some ideas for what location I may use and how I may conduct the photoshoots. I have various ideas so now I just need to concentrate on how to execute them.
The reason that I am not fully happy with my work so far is mainly because of all the problems I had in the studio for my second shoot. I do not feel that my high key lighting set up worked too well and I think I will have to book the studio out again after this project to try the high key lighting again. However, I am happy with my work on the low key shoot.

Studio Lighting Research

Studio Photography

Essential Skills

Third Edition

John Child

This is some research I have found for a low key set up in the studio. I feel that the images all being placed next to each other looks effective because it makes the images flow into each other. However, I do not think that I would like to use a similar style for my flyer with my group as I would prefer the images more spaced out.

Research into flyers

This is a photography promo flyer I found. Although I said before that I do not think you should really mix black and white with colour photographs, I think that this works well and I really like the concept of this. I think it looks really effective how the colour photographs are being held by people in black and white. This also is metaphorical for the photography company as they are stating that their photography is new and cutting edge like the colour photographs and the black and white photographs are fading into the background.

I would like to do something similar to this for the flyer with my group. However, we have decided to keep the flyer quite simple as it is our first promo flyer and we want the imagery to stand out and not to use any gimmicks.

Research into flyers

This is another example I found on the internet. This is a promotional flyer for a photographer named Martha Burzynski. I think this may be structured more like a business card than a flyer. However, it is still a similar promotional idea. Firstly, I like how a spotlight effect has been created yet it fades into black around the edges. I think that this effect may be created by using a snoot on a light so that it only targets one concentrated area.
Another aspect that interests me about this is how the womans body looks invisible yet her arms are still visible in the gloves. I think that this must have been edited maybe in Photoshop to get these results. However, I could be really bleached out with the lights also.
I think that there are similarities with this to my low key lighting work as I purposefully used dark coloured dresses on the models so that they would blend into the dark background.
Lastly, I think that the colour scheme on this looks really effective as it is so simple (just uses red, black and white).

Research

Photographer- Magnus Unnar

Dazed & Confused

Vol 2 Issue #48

The reason that I am looking at these photographs is not because of technical reasons but because of the style. This is because I like the way that these photographs are so simple yet they have something special about them. I think that this something special is due to the characters that are being photographed. They have found an interesting way to make an otherwise boring photograph interesting. I have been looking more at how models improvise and create new looks in front of the camera. Therefore, by me looking at examples like this, I’m sure it will start to inform my own work.

Studio Photographs Set 2

Image 2

Although this was one of the test shots, I really like it. I am keeping the idea very similar to my previous (low key) set up. This is because I want to keep it simple and also it may be interesting to contrast how a similar concept looks using a white backdrop instead of a black backdrop.
I began by setting up all the lights then pulling the backdrop down. One of the tutors helped me as I have not had much experience in setting up a high key lighting situation. However, after all the lights were set up and I was ready to take photographs, the new mamiya digital back was not working. Me and the tutor tried to amend the problem with it but were not sucessful. In the end I ended up using a Canon 30D SLR. We later managed to get the Mamiya working but I only managed to get about 15 minutes use with it. Therefore, this was a big problem on the day.
All in all, I think that I have learned quite a lot from the day. This is because I know exactly how to set up high key lighting now.

Research

Mutya Buena Album Cover

Found in i-D magazine

Issue no. 277

I have included this image as I feel that it is quite similar to my first set of studio photographs. This is because, firstly, it is a low key lighting set up. Additionally, I feel that it relates to my work as Mutya is wearing black. Therefore, her body blends into the background and this creates more emphasis on the parts of her body which are exposed i.e. her face. This is similar to my work in which the model is wearing a black dress.

Studio Photographs Set 1

Image 6

In this image I like the way that the right side of the models face is lit up and the left side is more shaded. This is because I think that it looks a little strange how her arm just disappears behind the dress.

Studio Photographs Set 1

Image 4

With this image, I wanted the model to look into the camera. I like this pose as I think it looks like the model is being secretive yet playful. However, I think that it is effective how the dress does not simply fade into the background as this would be quite dull.

Studio Photographs Set 1

Image 3

In a way, I feel that this image is quite similar to image 1. However, I rotated the photograph so that it almost looks like she is leaning against the wall. The reason I did this is because I think that compositionally the image looks more effective this way. I also think that the viewer can sympathise more with the subject this way. The reason why I like this image is because I thiink it has quite a romantic feel to it. This is due to the womans gaze. She looks as though she is in a world of her own. Additionally, the way that she is holding the pearls is another signifier that she is daydreaming.

Studio Photographs Set 1

Image 1

There are various reasons why I like this photograph. Firstly, I think that it look quite traditional in the way that the velvet dress is highlighted in some areas and the way that you cannot see the models face. Secondly, I love the way that shadows have formed on the womans back. This is because I feel that it kind of mimics the dress in the way that it has shadows and highlights landing across it.
On the downside, I do not like the way that the background is not completely black. To change this I should have brought the strength of the lights down slightly. Alternatively, I could have used a piece of black card next to the light and angled it so that the light was shining exclusively on the model and not on the backdrop.

First Lighting Set up

Lighting set up

For my first lighting set up there was a light on the right side of the model and a light on the left behind her so it she was backlit. Therefore, there must have been a light on just the right of the models face.

Review of studio work 4/12/07

In the studio, I used a low key lighting set up. I told him my aims for this project and I also took some research along with me of images that inspire me. These were mainly fashion photographs. George gave me some tips for the kind of lighting I should do and he also told me to just go for it and have fun with it. I found that he inspired me as he had a lot of ideas and he was very understanding about what I want to do.

Photographic Studio Practice Two Research

For this module I have decided to produce a body of work around the themes of fashion and maybe even fine art. I will be photographing a female model and will be making the photographs look very glamorous. I may also use the lighting on the models skin and capture the tones against her skin. I am basically keeping this idea very simple yet effective. I have made a dress for the model out of blue velvet and the dress is like an evening gown but is quite dramatic. I have also bought some vintage dresses from a market stall in Leeds which may be used in the photographs. I will be taking long shots but also close ups of the details on the dress and the model. The reason I have also chosen to take some close up photographs is because I think that this will look more effective if it is printed small on an A5 flyer (which is the outcome for the project).
